[Video Stream] Collingswood Board of Education Board Meeting 9/24/2018

Items on this meeting’s agenda included an update on the status of homeschool student participation in middle school athletics, how the district is looking into improving communication with the community, future events, swearing in of the new student members of the Collingswood Board of Education, the Annual State Testing Report for PARCC, a new policy regarding applicant employment history, and policy updates for procurement procedures for school nutrition programs and use of physical restraint and seclusion techniques for students with disabilities.

Committee of the Whole Highlights

  • Board member Regan Kaiden is spoke about an update and information about the Equity Committee.
  • President Fiona Henry is asked for an update for the permission of Middle School Students that are homeschooled are allowed to participate in athletics
    • Dr. Oswald explained that there is paperwork via the family portal. One student has already enrolled and other is in the “pipeline”. So some families are taking advantage of the pilot program already
  • Dr. Oswald met with a consultant for public relations
    • another meeting will be scheduled to meet with the consultant and the ad-hoc committee for Community relations
  • there will be a free heart screening at the high school. Cardiologists will be on site- no charge for participants. Signup will be available online, so keep an eye out for details about time, location, and date
  • There have been some changes made for the usual presentations schedule

Board Meeting Highlights

  • Ms. Coleman, Board Secretary, swore in the 2018-2019 student representatives to the Collingswood Board of Education.
  • Mr. Yamamoto presented the Annual State Testing Report.
    • These slides show the proficiency seen in PARCC testing
    • this year the team will be looking at 7th grade + math to see why there is a struggle
    • The RACE model will continue for Literacy

Public Comment Highlights

  • A resident is asked why there is a drop at the secondary level (grade 6 and up) in the PARCC scores as reported by Mr. Yamamoto
    • Mr. Yamamoto said that they are implementing and searching for more tools to help with screening for issues in Language Arts and Math
  • President Henry requested that the public submits questions via email, phone, or another method rather than asking questions during public comment.

Jen Rossi, Vice President Jen Rossi moved to Collingswood with her spouse in 2012. She is a graduate of Georgian Court University with a Bachelor's Degree in Education and Fine Art. She has a certificate of eligibility with advanced standing in Elementary Education (K-5) and as a Teacher of Fine Art (K-12). After a part-time floating position and substitute teaching, Jen returned to the corporate world. Getting the information in the hands of people who need it with the help of guidebooks, webinars, instructional videos, blog posts, social media alerts, and online courses. With this background in education and knowledge of the process for communicating important information to anyone willing to hear it, Jen focuses her energy on making a big impact with small things- making life a little more convenient, helping people get informed, keeping things practical and timely, and encouraging achievable goals for success. In her free time, Jen loves upcycling, improving, and otherwise repurposing materials to the delight of family, neighbors, and Etsy customers. She looks forward to running down questions and getting helpful information into social feeds and inboxes of members of the Collingswood community.
